Social Networking and Stabilization

Hans Rosling’s idea of a United Nation or equal nation’s sounds wonderful if everyone desired peace and there became liberty and justice for all with this leadership. Perhaps it is possible, but unlikely as we have a very difficult time finding a leader we can trust. There is a greater possibility this can happen with social networking as people can share ideas globally but everyone would have to come to an agreement on how we are governed. It would also likely require a world revolt of most citizens as leaders of nations are not likely to give up their power. The way things are right now, this is impossible as the United States government is monitoring everything online and by telephone throughout the world. We have become aware of this because of Edward Snowden. According to a report from Frontline called “United States of Secrets” many people were against this happening as it compromises the Constitution, but they were not able to stop it. It is really important to try to stop unwarranted wiretapping and other breaches of privacy as this gives the United States government too much power and it is what the forefathers of our nation tried to prevent from ever happening. They have gone further than they need to in order to prevent terrorism.
I do believe the internet and social networking has given citizens a great deal of power that can be used for good. People can share the truth and hold the guilty accountable with it. It is great that people from various nations can share ideas and help one another.

There are negative aspects to social media though. One major concern is that there is no monitoring as to what is posted and if it is legitimate. After watching a couple episodes of the TV show “Black Mirror” I can see how social media could get very out of hand and in a very extreme case; completely take over our lives!
